"This Girl Can" is run by Sport England as a way of getting women into the outdoors improving their fitness and confidence. We will be using sections of the newly created Dartmoor Way long distance footpath that circles Dartmoor as the basis for delivering this.We are aiming to recruit women who maybe are lacking in some confidence with outdoor skills and who would like to be able to take themselves out into the countryside on walks by giving them basic navigation skills, an appreciation of the countryside code, where they can and cannot walk, what to wear, safety procedures etc. It is not aimed at women who will already have these skills.
We will be using female instructors and the course format will consist of a days raining followed by a morning or afternoons refresher session. We are planning for a group number of 6 for each course. Between the training day and refresher morning or afternoon, we will be encouraging our participants to take themselves out on walks to reinforce their training before coming back for the follow up refresher. As many of the Dartmoor Way’s sections start or finish in towns, we will be using one that has parking, public transport and facilities.
It is hoped that the courses will be run during the Summer but this will depend on Covid restrictions that may be In place at the time. In April, we will be supplying further details about the dates together with an application form. It’s possible that we will be oversubscribed in which case we will have to run a ballot.
