The first steps in dealing with a path problem
If you encounter a problem anywhere along the route, you should take a photograph
and make a note of the grid reference at the location of the problem. Please read
the next section on responsibilities which should allow you to decide whether the
problem should be reported to DNP, DCC or DW.
Who is responsible for maintenance?
The maintenance of the public rights of way which form the Dartmoor Way (DW)
walking route are mainly the responsibility of Dartmoor National Park (DNP),
but some sections, mainly around towns, are outside the park, making them the
responsibility of Devon County Council (DCC).
The Dartmoor Way committee have
agreed to use our volunteers to deal with minor problems along the route, such
as using secateurs to cut back overgrown vegetation and replacing broken or
missing way marks.
It has been agreed that more substantial problems, such as
fallen trees, broken stiles / gates, flooding or major overgrowth of hedgerows,
should be reported directly to DNP or DCC, using their existing systems. (See below.)
